Certainty Frequently Asked Questions
Certainty SmartBoost Overview
Certainty SmartBoost is a water-based laundry additive that works with your favorite detergent to infuse machine-washable fabrics with protection against bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause odors and degradation. Formulated to be used every time you do laundry, Certainty SmartBoost is non-irritating, environmentally responsible, and is safe for use even on diapers and infant clothing and fabrics that touch food.
Certainty SmartBoost continuously fights the growth of microbes such as bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause odor and fabric degradation. It reduces the risk of bringing unwanted bacteria home, keeping garments fresher and odor-free between washing, and helping them last longer. To maintain antimicrobial protection, Certainty SmartBoost must be used every time a garment is laundered.
Adding Certainty SmartBoost to every load is as a quick, easy way to protect your scrubs or other clothing.
BIOSAFE, the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, forms a colorless, odorless layer of protection on your garment during the rinse cycle. When it comes into contact with an unwanted microorganism, BIOSAFE disrupts the cell’s membrane, causing its cytoplasm and organelles to leak out, effectively destroying it. It’s like popping a water balloon. Because of the way BIOSAFE interacts with microorganisms, they unable to create a resistance to it.
BIOSAFE, the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, is the only EPA antimicrobial approved in-laundry fabric treatment that’s also approved for textiles and surfaces that come in contact with food. It’s also approved safe to use on diapers and children’s clothing. Certainty SmartBoost is the safest in-laundry antimicrobial fabric treatment available.
No. Certainty SmartBoost adheres to the fibers of a garment and forms an invisible shield. If anything, BIOSAFE, the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, has been known to make some fabrics softer.
How to Use Certainty SmartBoost
Wash your garments as you normally would, using your favorite laundry detergent. Certainty SmartBoost is formulated to be used during the rinse cycle. For most washing machines, you would add Certainty SmartBoost to the softener port. If your machine doesn’t have a softener port, pour the recommended amount into the water during the rinse cycle. For best results, pour it into the water pockets, avoiding direct contact with clothes.
Each 20 oz bottle can do approximately 20 laundering. Use 1 oz for a regular size load and 2 oz for an oversized load in a high capacity machine.
Yes, Certainty SmartBoost can be used on any machine-washable fabric. It is not recommended for silk or wool, but those fabrics are not generally machine-washable. Certainty SmartBoost does not contain bleach and may be safely used on colors and darks.
Yes. Certainty SmartBoost does not replace your regular laundry detergent, and it doesn’t remove dirt. It’s added to your laundry after the wash cycle to help protect garments from microorganisms that cause odor and fabric degradation between regular launderings.
Interactions with other laundry products, including your regular detergent, are not a concern. However, in order to work properly, Certainty SmartBoost must be applied to clean clothes. This is why it’s added to the rinse cycle, after the clothes have been washed. Simply pour Certainty SmartBoost in the softener port of your washing machine, and it will be automatically added during the rinse cycle. Note, do not add liquid fabric softener as it will cancel out the benefits of Certainty SmartBoost. Feel free to use dryer sheets though.
Certainty SmartBoost is designed to protect garments between washes. It will not clean clothes or replace your detergent. Certainty SmartBoost will wash out during launderings, so you must add it to the rinse cycle every time you wash your clothes to maintain the antimicrobial protection.
As long as you pour Certainty SmartBoost into the softener port of your washing machine machine and you don’t use liquid fabric softener at the same time, you cannot mess it up. Your machine will automatically add Certainty SmartBoost during the rinse cycle, and you can rest assured that your garments will come out protected. If you add Certainty SmartBoost during the wash cycle or you include liquid fabric softener, you won’t harm your clothes, but they won’t get the added protection. Certainty SmartBoost must be applied to the rinse cycle, usually by putting it in the softener port of your machine. If you add it during the wash cycle, or to dirty clothes, it will not work.
Because Certainty SmartBoost is invisible and doesn’t change how the garment feels, it is impossible to see that it is working. As long as you use it properly when you do your laundry, it will do its job. Proper use means either adding the recommended amount of Certainty SmartBoost to the softener port of a working washing machine, or adding it manually during the machine’s rinse cycle.
Your machine will clean the clothes, then infuse Certainty SmartBoost protection into them as they are rinsed. Your clean garments will be protected from bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause odors and degradation. Note that washing your clothes will remove the Certainty SmartBoost protection, so remember to use it every time you do laundry.
While you can’t see that Certainty SmartBoost is working, you can “smell” that it is. Do you have clothes that you can never get to smell clean? Your favorite workout gear, your teen’s funky bedding, those musty beach towels you were going to throw out? We designed the “Certainty SmartBoost Smell Challenge” for you because we fell the results speak – or rather smell – for themselves.
Next time you wash those clothes with a linger odor, add a capful of Certainty SmartBoost to the rinse cycle, and after they dry, email Info@certaintytechnologies.com and tell us how they smell.
Testing and Safety
While Certainty SmartBoost itself is exempt from EPA registration under 40 CFR 152.25(a), the active ingredient, BIOSAFE, is registered with the EPA. (Complete name: BIOSAFE HM 4100 Antimicrobial – EPA Reg. No. 83019-1)
In addition to testing for antimicrobial efficacy, the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, BIOSAFE, has been extensively tested and verified by independent GLP EPA/FDA certified labs (more than 40 different studies and tests). This includes testing for:
– Systemic toxicity
– Intracutaneous toxicity
– Irritation and sensitization
Additional testing performed:
– An inhalation study
– A 48-day human patch study (RIPT)
– A HETCAM study for eye irritation
While BIOSAFE has been tested against a wide range of microorganisms during the process of receiving EPA approval and FDA clearance, the only claim that BIOSAFE is currently making is that it will infuse machine-washable fabrics with protection against bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause odors and degradation. Garments treated with Certainty SmartBoost antimicrobial laundry additive do not protect users or others against bacteria, viruses or disease organisms. Always follow all best practices for infection prevention. Requests for test results should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Certainty SmartBoost is a “green,” environmentally responsible solution. Its water-based formula does not contain any bis-chlorinated phenols or parabens. The laundry treatment decays into commonly-occurring material like silicon dioxide (sand), carbon and nitrogen oxides, and water.
No. We performed a standard, well-known ISO skin irritation study at an independent lab to ensure that the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, BIOSAFE, is not sensitizing or irritating to the skin. Copies of this study are available upon request by sending an email to email@example.com.
The EPA has approved BIOSAFE, the active ingredient in Certainty SmartBoost, for use onchildren’s clothing incluing diapers and garments worn by infants. And, BIOSFAE is also the only EPA antimicrobial approved as an in-laundry fabric treatment and for use with textiles and surfaces that come in contact with food.
