TAILORING SURFACES FOR COLOR COSMETICS
Modifying Surface chemistry of pigments and powders provides robust, permanently modified behavior, expanding formulation latitude in personal care. Gelest has the unique ability to synthesize specialty silanes and silicones and employ these materials as reactive surface treatments.
The functions of surface treatment in cosmetic formulations include:
- Improvement of skin feel
- Improvement in wetting
- Uniform color development
- Maximization of attainable pigment load
- Reduction in the amount of energy and time required for dispersion
- Passivation of the pigment surface to reduce physical and chemical interaction with the vehicle
These siliceous surface treatments can show:
- Lubricious Tactile Effect
- Precise Surface Energy Control
- Water Repellency – Hydrophobic
- Water Dispersibility – Hydrophilic
- Dispersion and Rheological Control
- Stability throughout the range of physiological pH
- Oil and Water Repellency – Oleophobic and Hydrophobic
- Lipophilicity – Stable Interaction with siloxane, organic and aqueous phases filename
- Loose Powders
- Pressed Powders

AS TREATMENT (POLYCAPRYLYLSILSESQUIOXANE)
AS treated pigments and fillers are coated with an alkyl functional silsesquioxane which provides a hydrophobic coating that increases the ease of particle dispersion in natural and synthetic fluids and helps to stabilize particles in emulsion systems. The AS treatment is polymer based to allow for registration as a polymeric material.
SS TREATMENT (STEARYL TRIETHOXYSILANE)
SS surface modification combines the lubricious feel of oleaginous treatments with physical and chemical stability of reacted coating.
TC TREATMENT (TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE)
TC pigments and fillers are coated with an alkyl silane which provides a very hydrophobic coating that increases the ease of particle dispersion in natural and synthetic fluids and helps to stabilize particles in emulsion systems.
HYDROSPERSE TREATMENT (DISODIUM CARBOXYETHYL SILICONATE)
Gelest Hydrosperse surface modification creates an anionic, hydrophilic reacted coating that provides instant dispersion in aqueous media without high shear agitation.
ML SURFACE MODIFICATION (DIMETHICONE PEG-3 LAURATE)
ML pigments and fillers are coated with a combination of alkyl and polyethylene glycol functional groups that are balanced to maximize wetting in non-polar oils.
SR TREATMENT (TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE)
SR pigments and fillers are coated with a hydroxyl terminated silsesquioxane network that improves adhesion to skin and hair. Because SR pigments are hydrophobic, yet are not overly sensitive to oils, including sebum, they are particularly suited for use in eye makeup formulation.
DE TREATMENT (DIETHYLSILOXANE)
DE treated pigments and fillers offer faster dispersion, improved spreadability, improved Color Development when compared to methicone treatments. This global approved surface treatment decreases oil absorption allowing for ease of dispersion. Pigments with this treatment are recommended for use in lipsticks, BB creams, pressed powders, liquid foundations, and cream to powder/hot pours.
