Alkynylsilanes are chemical compounds where the silyl functional group is directly bonded to the sp-carbon of the triple bond. These reagents are also referred to as silylacetylenes. The vast majority of applications of 1-silylacetylenes occur where the silyl group, typically trimethylsilyl, serves as a protecting group for the reactive terminal C-H bond. Silyl protecting groups can be removed under mild conditions in the presence of other protecting groups. The sterics and electronics of silyl protecting groups afford stereoselectivity of the reactions with the triple bond.
