Search Help
There are several ways to search for products offered by Gelest. If you are unable to locate the product(s) of interest to you, please call our technical assistance service or use the Information Request feature of this site to send E-mail.
- By Application - click on the Application icon. You will see a list of application areas, such as Advanced Ceramics, Adhesives and Sealants, and many more. Click on an application, and you will receive a list of products that can be used or are relevant to that application. Click on any product code to see more information about that product.
- By Product Line - click on the Product Line icon. You will see a list of categories, such as Silicon Compounds, Tin Compounds, and others. Click on the category of interest. As with the Application Search, you will obtain a list of products, and you can click on a product code to see more about it.
- The "Simple Search" box - Click on the Product Search icon, and you will see a form with a single box for input. You can type in a CAS Registry Number, a name, or a partial name. You can use * to represent unknown or variable functions or groups. For example:
entering this |
retrieves the following |
trimethylsilyl |
all products whose names begin with "trimethylsilyl" |
*trimethylsilyl |
all products with "trimethylsilyl" somewhere in the name |
*chloro*silyl |
all products with "chloro" somewhere in the name and "silyl" somewhere later in the name |
=silane |
the product whose name is "silane" (an exact match) |
- Advanced Query with Plugin - This feature lets you search by chemical structure or substructure using the ChemDraw Plugin. It also allows you to specify product code, molecular weight range, molecular formula, and combinations of structural, text, and numeric fields. To perform structure and substructure searches you must download and install the ChemDraw Plugin, which adds structure drawing and viewing capabilities to your Web browser. See "Browser Help" for the list of supported browsers and versions.
Name - this works the way the Simple Search box works; that it, you can enter a full name, a partial name, or a combination of words and "wildcard" symbols (*).
Product Code - Enter a complete product code or part of a product code with the wildcard character (*).
Formula - You can enter a complete formula or part of the formula with *. Thus C8H19ClSi will retrieve all isomers that have this formula, but C8* will retrieve all compounds that have 8 carbon atoms. The search engine will not add a * on the end of your formula; if you enter C5H12Br2, you will not retrieve C5H12Br2Si. The * symbol cannot be used for the number of atoms; thus *Si* will retrieve all compounds containing one silicon atom, not all the compounds containing any number of silicon atoms. Similarly, *Si2* will retrieve all compounds containing exactly two silicon atoms.
CAS Number - you must enter a complete CAS number; no wildcards are allowed.
Molecular Weight - You may enter a number or a range of numbers. Entering 200 will retrieve those compounds whose molecular weight is 200 ± 1. Entering 200-210 will retrieve all compounds whose molecular weight is between 200 and 210; a compound with MW = 199.65 will not be retrieved. You can also use greater-than and less-than searches. That is, <300 will retrieve all compounds with molecular weight less than 300.
The Applications and Product Type boxes are drop-down lists which limit your search to one application and one product type. If you only choose one application or one product, and fill in no other fields, then you must put * in the Name field. You can combine these choices: for example, you may choose Chemical Vapor Deposition as the Application, and Tin Compounds as the product line (you must still put * in the Name field), and you will obtain all tin compounds relevant for chemical vapor deposition applications. You can combine any or all of these search criteria. For example, you can enter *phenyl* in the Name field, choose Polymer Synthesis as the application, and specify a molecular weight range of 300-500, and you will obtain all the products (if any) that satisfy these criteria.
Structure and Substructure Search - You draw the structure or part of the structure that interests you, using the tools palette of the ChemDraw Plugin. You specify the search type you want using the drop down list box: Substructure, Exact Structure, or Tanimoto Similarity.
If a search gives you too many hits for convenient browsing, try to specify more of the name or structure, or narrow the ranges. If your search returns no records, try to relax the criteria - specify less of the structure or name, broaden the ranges, or choose fewer criteria.
