Materials containing silicon and other metal atoms can be used in a wide range of optical applications. Silicone gels and elastomers can be used as cladding or sealing materials with high optical transmission. These materials can be adjusted to provide index matching of the substrate. UV curable acrylate modified silicones can provide index matching for polymethacrylates while epoxy modified silicone systems can add scratch resistance to polycarbonates. If UV cure is undesirable, silicone resins can be cured to surfaces thermally to provide scratch resistance and weather resistance. Metal-organic compounds can be used in vapor deposition techniques to apply coatings on surfaces. Silicones and silanes can be applied to optical fibers to provide lubricity, protection from moisture and help reduce breakage and surface fractions.
