Gelest, Inc. offers a wide of range silanes and silicones for use as surface modifiers. One of the most sought-after properties is hydrophobicity. This can be used in applications such as rendering glassware water repellent or affecting the wetting of water on a substrate causing it to bead up. Alkylsilanes impart hydrophobicity and can be reacted onto the surface using 5 to 10% solutions in alcohol followed by curing at 120OC. Silicones can also be applied to the surface either in solution or neat to yield a hydrophobic surface.. Long chain fluoroalkylsilanes offer hydrophobicity as well as oleophobicity. Applications that call for these properties include: architectural coatings, water repellants, modification of fillers in composites and surface treatments of minerals.
A brochure is available describing Gelest’s products and application information. Hydrophobicity, Hydrophilicity and Silane Surface Modification
